Managing Risk: Protect Your Financial Future With Insurance

By WDW Financial November 7, 2024 2 min read

When you think of personal finance, your financial goals are likely the first thing that comes to mind. What individuals often don’t consider is how to actively protect those goals. We’re starting our risk management series with the quarterback: insurance. Insurance mitigates risk by providing financial protection against unforeseen events.

Life Insurance: Term vs. Whole

Term life insurance provides coverage for a specific period and is often the most affordable option. Whole life insurance offers lifelong coverage and includes a cash value component that grows over time on a tax-deferred basis. The right amount of coverage depends on the financial support your family would need — income replacement, debt repayment, and future expenses like college tuition.

Understanding Your Health Insurance Options

Individual insurance is a policy you purchase for yourself or family; employer-sponsored plans are often more affordable due to group rates. Three terms to know:

  • Deductibles — what you pay out-of-pocket before insurance kicks in.
  • Copays — a fixed amount for specific services like doctor visits or prescriptions.
  • Out-of-pocket maximums — the most you’ll pay in a plan year before insurance covers 100%.

Disability Insurance

Disability insurance replaces a portion of your income if you can’t work. Short-term coverage typically lasts up to six months; long-term can cover several years or until retirement. Employer policies often cover only part of your salary, so individual policies can bridge the gap and stay with you when you change jobs.

Property and Casualty Insurance

  • Homeowners protects your home and belongings (floods and earthquakes are usually excluded).
  • Auto is required in nearly every state and combines liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage.
  • Umbrella provides extra liability coverage beyond your other policies.

Insurance Planning and Review

Like your financial plan, insurance policies require regular assessment. Major life changes — marriage, childbirth, buying a home — call for adjusted coverage. An insurance professional can help you find the right protection for your circumstances.

At WDW Financial, our focus is on securing your financial future. Insurance is a critical component of a robust financial plan and risk management strategy, offering protection and peace of mind when unexpected events occur.
